$63.9m contract: US orders additional batch of modernised M109 SAWs from BAE Systems

The US Army has ordered BAE Systems to modernise additional M109 self-propelled artillery systems.

Here's What We Know

Information was shared by the U.S. Department of Defence. It is about modernisation of the installations to the M109A7 version. They will replace the old M109A6 SAU. The contract is designed for $63.9 million. The delivery of systems is planned to be completed in 2027.

Flashback

The M109A7 is the latest version of the M109 self-propelled artillery system. It boasts a redesigned hull, as well as a 675hp V903 engine, transmission and tracks from the Bradley BMP. The M109A7 comes with a 155mm M284 cannon of 39 calibre and an automatic projectile dispenser. It has a maximum target engagement range of up to 40 kilometres (depending on the type of projectile).
