As of 2024, Valve has officially ended support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, meaning that users of these outdated operating systems will need to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 in order to continue using Steam.

Here's What We Know

It's worth noting that Steam will continue to work on these systems, but in the absence of future updates, any bugs or issues that may arise will remain unresolved. Also, sooner or later, the Steam client will become outdated and you will be forced to update your operating system if you want to continue using the store.

Valve warned users that Steam would stop supporting Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 back in March last year, explaining that Google had stopped supporting its Google Chrome browser and, consequently, the Chromium engine used in the Windows version of Steam.

Microsoft itself released the last update for Windows 7 in early 2020. Following it, Google Chrome, Nvidia, and others stopped supporting the OS.

Let me remind you that Windows 7 was released in 2009, Windows 8 in 2012, and Windows 8.1 in 2013.
