Xiaomi 12S Ultra did not get a proximity sensor: instead, it uses AI-based software
Proximity sensor is one of the oldest problems in Xiaomi smartphones. The company was able to solve it in its latest flagship Xiaomi 12S Ultra in a very unique way.
What we know
Xiaomi 12S Ultra has no problems with the proximity sensor, because the smartphone has no proximity sensor. The novelty can automatically turn off the display when the user brings the phone to the ear, but it uses software algorithms to do so.
Last yearXiaomi announced a partnership with the Norwegian company Elliptic Labs. The latter has developed artificial intelligence-based software that acts as a proximity sensor. The AI analyzes data from the gyroscope, accelerometer and applications to turn the display on and off at the right time.
The new solution is called AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform. Elliptic Labs said it makes gadgets greener, smarter and more convenient for people. If not in the words of press releases, the software reduces the cost of production and eliminates the risk of running into component shortages.
