F-16 upgrades improve fighter effectiveness against cruise missiles and target tracking capabilities

Company Northrop Grumman completed the modernization of fighters F-16 for the United States National Guard.

The F-16s received fifth-generation AESA active-grid radars with electronic scanning. This allows the fighters to track larger targets at extended range with increased accuracy. The aircraft upgrade process began in 2017 and took the contractor five years to complete. It is based on the Northrop Grumman radars used in the F-22 and F-35.

The company says the new radar allows the F-16s to track "more targets than the fighter can hit". Northrop Grumman also claims that the upgraded aircraft will be more effective against cruise missiles. The old APG-68 fire control radar has virtually zero effectiveness against them.
