The U.S. Army received the first M270A2 MLRS with a new launcher and GMLRS ammunition support with a range of up to 150 km
In 2022, Lockheed Martin began upgrading M270 MLRS to M270A2. Last week, the U.S. Army received its first multiple rocket launcher.
What's known
The M270A2 MLRS uses the same fire control system as the M270 MLRS - Common Fire Control System (CFCS). By the way, it is also used in M142 HIMARS. The upgraded version has a new engine, transmission, launcher module and an improved armored cab, which provides protection from mines and small arms to the crew.
The rocket launcher M270A2 MLRS can fire GMLRS ammunition with a maximum range of 150 km. The launcher costs about $1 ,000 ,000.
The U.S. Department of Defense has placed an order to upgrade 160 M270A0 to M270A2. In addition, the Defense Department is prepared to extend the life of the 225 M M270A1 jet systems through 2050, subject to modernization. Thus, upon completion of the project, the United States will receive 385 upgraded M270A2 MLRS.
