For the first time in history, the U.S. has placed B-52 Stratofortress nuclear bombers under NATO command

In a training mission, American B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers were operated by NATO military personnel for the first time in history.

Here's What We Know

The planes came under Alliance command during a military exercise in Romania. NATO practiced procedures for escorting strategic bombers to the Black Sea region from Great Britain by transiting Romanian airspace.

Allied forces from Canada, Romania and France took part in the exercise. The B-52 Stratofortress aircraft simulated defensive and offensive maneuvers during the flight. Four bombers were used for the exercise, which is based at the Royal British Air Force air base in Fairford, England.

The B-52 Stratofortress is an American aircraft manufactured by Boeing. The bombers have been in service for about 70 years. During this time, the manufacturer has produced more than 700 aircraft. The B-52 Stratofortress can carry many bombs and missiles, including nuclear ones.
