In addition to the new batch of Gepard self-propelled air defense systems, Germany has handed Ukraine one Cobra counter-battery radar system.

Here's What We Know

This is stated on the website of the Bundeswehr. It is one of the best radars in the world. It is designed to detect the position of enemy artillery, mortar batteries, as well as improvised rocket launchers. Besides, such radar can calculate the points of impact of shells and missiles. This makes it possible to correct the fire of its units, as well as inform them of the danger of fire.

Cobra is equipped with an active phased antenna array. The operating range of the radar is 40 km. Maximum reconnaissance performance is 40 firing positions in 2 minutes. The system deploys in 10 minutes. This radar is operated by 3-4 people.

By the way, Cobra is a joint development of Thales, Airbus Defense and Space and Lockheed Martin. The first radars started to be used in 2005. The cost of one unit is about 50 000 000 euros.
