Russia could create nuclear warheads for the S-400, Buk-M3, and A-135 Amur air defense systems
A few years ago, Russian specialists could create new tactical nuclear warheads designed for air defense systems.
Here's What We Know
Information about this became available to the public after an article appeared about the research and development division of the Russian federal nuclear center. It became known only now, although the date of publication is given as 2016.
The text does not contain details about the nuclear warheads, but the authors of the article note that the new military equipment was developed "for three complexes of tactical nuclear weapons and an air defense system. Presumably, it is Buk-M3, S-400 and A-135 Amur.
The use of nuclear warheads in air defense systems only at first glance looks unreasonable. In reality, it might make sense, given that Russia is actively using anti-aircraft missile systems to strike ground targets. And in the case of the Buk-M3 SAMs, which entered service in 2016, the ability to destroy ground targets is an officially stated parameter.
