Satellite communication in iPhone 14 for the first time helped save a man - he was stuck on the road in the state of Alaska, where the Emergency SOS function may not work

The iPhone 14 smartphones have the Emergency satellite feature, which proved useful on the first day of winter.

On the night of Dec. 1, a man was traveling on a snowmobile in Alaska. He had left Norwick and was on his way to Kotzebue, but got stuck on the road, then decided to use the SOS emergency feature.

The man gave his coordinates, thanks to which he was successfully found by a team of four rescuers. As a result, the victim was taken to his destination.

Interestingly, in the place where the traveler got stuck, the Emergency SOS function might not work. It is not available above 62 degrees latitude. Given that Emergency SOS has so far only been launched in the U.S. and Canada, we are talking about northern latitude. The man was at a latitude of about 66 degrees.

Apple has spent $450 million to deploy the satellite feature. Now it is available in the U.S. and Canada, but by the end of the year Emergency SOS will be launched in some European countries.
