Ford Motor Company is ready to resume production of the F-150 Lightning II electric vehicle. Work will begin as early as next week.

Here's What We Know

It was learned in mid-February that Ford is suspending production and delivery of F-150 electric pickups due to a battery problem. The fault was discovered during quality control at Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center (REVC).

Prior to that, one vehicle caught fire in the car park due to a battery problem. What exactly caused the fire, and how the company was able to fix the fault, is not specified at this time.

Ford Motor will start production lines on 13 March 2023. This will give SK On, the battery supplier, some time to ramp up battery production at the Georgia plant and ship to Michigan, where the F-150 Lightning is being assembled.

Production of the electric pickups began in April 2022. Since then, the company has been able to sell fewer than 20,000 vehicles. In 2021, the company had to close its pre-order intake after it collected 200,000 applications. Ford plans to increase production of the F-150 Lightning to 150,000 units per year.
