Ford halts delivery of F-150 Lightning electric pickups due to battery problems

US manufacturer Ford Motor has been forced to halt deliveries of its popular F-150 Lightning II electric pickups. The reason was a defect in the battery.

Here's What We Know

Ford has officially announced the suspension of deliveries of electric vehicles. The battery defect was discovered during quality control. The automaker said that it was almost able to identify the cause of the fault and will develop an action plan in the coming days to prevent such defects in the future.

Ford representatives said that the investigation is ongoing. As a result, the company has been forced to temporarily halt shipments and sales of electric vehicles. It is possible that deliveries will remain on pause for several weeks.

The supplier of the traction batteries is SK On. In the future, Ford will start producing batteries at its own plant in Michigan, but until then it will still buy LFP batteries from CATL.

Ford wants to sell 350,000 electric F-150 Lightning pickups during 2023. It is not yet clear how much the planned figure will be affected by the supply stoppage. However, the company does not intend to recall the already sold vehicles.
