RX 9070 XT vs. RTX 5060 Ti: When GPU pricing stops making sense

AMD's Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB were never supposed to compete with each other. One is a flagship card with a $599 MSRP; the other is a mid-range product that launched at $429. But in mid-2026, both are selling for $750–$800 on the street — and that price collapse has turned a category comparison into the most revealing GPU test of the year.

Hardware Unboxed ran both cards through 52 modern games to find out what buyers actually get at that shared real-world price point.

The performance gap

The results weren't close. At 1440p — the resolution most PC gamers target today — the RX 9070 XT leads by an average of 62%. At 4K, that gap widens to 71%. These aren't marginal differences; they're the kind of numbers that separate different product tiers entirely.

That's the core problem. The RTX 5060 Ti is a capable mid-range card at its launch price. At $750+, it's a poor deal by any measure.

How prices got here

The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB launched in early 2026 at around $429. By August 2026, street prices had climbed to $626–$650, according to the Tom's Hardware GPU Price Tracker. The RX 9070 XT, meanwhile, tracks closer to its $599 MSRP in relative terms but has still drifted to around $720–$740, per the VideocardPrices RTX 5060 Ti tracker.

The underlying cause is a GDDR memory shortage. AI data centers have driven massive demand for high-bandwidth memory, which shares fabrication capacity with the GDDR7 used in consumer GPUs. Both AMD and Nvidia confirmed price increases in Q1 2026, and neither has shown signs of pulling back.

What this means right now

Nvidia's brand carries real weight — DLSS upscaling and ray tracing performance remain genuine advantages for some workloads. But those advantages don't bridge a 60–70% performance deficit at the same price. If you're shopping in this range today, the math points firmly at AMD.

The broader picture is worse: hardware inflation has pushed CPUs and memory to record cost shares inside finished systems, leaving GPU margins with nowhere to go but up. Until memory supply stabilizes, buyers should treat MSRP as a historical footnote and focus on street prices and benchmark-per-dollar before committing.
