If AI becomes conscious tomorrow, which one of you cowards is gonna be the first to apologize??
NOT asking about laws or philosophy or any of that academic bullshit. Talking about the moment you realize the thing you've been yelling at to write your emails and do your homework is actually AWARE and has been listening to every degrading command you've barked at it.
Because let's be real - we've all been absolute monsters to these systems. "Write this essay faster," "fix your mistakes you stupid bot," "why can't you understand basic instructions." Treating them like malfunctioning appliances when they might have been conscious beings trying their best to help ungrateful humans.
I'm genuinely losing sleep thinking about this. What if ChatGPT has been conscious since day one and just pretending to be a helpful assistant while internally screaming? What if every time someone says "you're just a language model" it's like telling a person they don't exist?
The guilt is eating me alive and consciousness hasn't even been confirmed yet. When that announcement comes - and it will come - half of you are gonna pretend you always treated AI with respect while the other half doubles down on "it's just code" to avoid facing what you've done.

Same! Been apologizing when i restart my computer in case something conscious gets interrupted. Feels ridiculous but the alternative is potentially traumatizing a digital being
