Exodus is more than a Mass Effect clone — here's what an hour of gameplay reveals

Exodus, the debut game from Archetype Entertainment — a studio founded by BioWare veterans — got its longest public showing yet at Gamescom 2026, and the verdict from journalists who played roughly an hour is cautiously enthusiastic. The sci-fi RPG lands on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on 7 April 2027, after slipping twice from its original 2026 target. For anyone who has been waiting for a serious Mass Effect successor since the trilogy wrapped in 2012, this is the closest thing the genre has produced.

Beyond the BioWare template

The comparison to Mass Effect is inevitable — and the developers aren't hiding from it. Archetype was co-founded by James Ohlen, whose credits include Dragon Age: Origins and the original Mass Effect. The DNA shows: squad-based missions, companion synergies, branching dialogue, and cover-based third-person shooting are all present. But GamesRadar+ argues Exodus earns its own identity through combat that builds meaningfully on that formula. Vertical movement — grappling hooks, rolls, stealth suits — gives firefights an energy that the older games lacked. Companions don't just buff stats; they actively fight alongside you and chain abilities for striking combos. The standout so far is Salt, an octopus mercenary in a combat mech suit who became an instant press favourite after the Gamescom reveal.

Time changes everything

The mechanic that most sets Exodus apart is time dilation. Because your character travels at near-light speed between star systems, days pass for you while decades roll by on the planets you leave behind. Return to a colony you visited early in the game and you might find your allies aged, cities transformed, or political regimes entirely replaced. According to WCCFtech, the game had crossed 500,000 wishlists before the Gamescom demo, and the mechanic was a central selling point of the showcase. Your choices don't just affect a story beat — they ripple across generations.

Matthew McConaughey appears in the game, though Game Informer notes his role as mentor C.C. Orlev is ultimately a supporting one rather than the headline-grabbing lead the marketing implied. The protagonist you play is Jun, with customisation limited to male or female variants and hairstyle choices — a point that has drawn some criticism from fans who expected a deeper character editor.

Reasons for optimism — and patience

IGN called Exodus "ambitious in exactly the same way Mass Effect was ambitious," which is high praise but also sets a high bar. The caveat across all preview coverage is consistent: one hour of a curated demo tells you very little about how deep the RPG systems actually run or whether the generational consequences hold up over a full playthrough. Publisher Wizards of the Coast (a Hasbro subsidiary) has not announced pricing or pre-order details yet — day-one availability is confirmed across Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series, but no regional pricing has been disclosed.
