One MIM-104 Patriot system in Ukraine may have been damaged but not destroyed - US assesses extent of damage
The Russian Defence Ministry has claimed the destruction of the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system in Ukraine. A high-ranking US official on condition of anonymity denies this, but claims that the anti-aircraft missile system was damaged.
Here's What We Know
US experts are currently examining the extent of the damage to the air defence system. It is possible that the MIM-104 Patriot can be repaired in Ukraine. But it is possible that the complex or its separate parts will have to be returned to the USA.
The Air Force has two Patriot systems in service. One was handed over by the US and the other by Denmark and Germany jointly. Which of the systems was potentially damaged is not specified at this time.
The Patriot system may have been damaged during an attack on the night of 16 May, when 6 hypersonic missiles were intercepted. Ukraine's air force has refused to comment on Russian defence ministry claims it destroyed the surface-to-air missile system.
