Republic of Korea invests $1.81 billion to upgrade K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer
Earlier this month, we wrote about the Republic of Korea's plans to upgrade its K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers. A few weeks later, details of the artillery upgrade project emerged.
Here's What We Know
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) this week announced approval of the plan to upgrade the self-propelled artillery units. The project will cost $1.81 billion and will take four years to complete in 2027.
The K9 Thunder will be upgraded to Block I level. The $1.81bn project aims to improve the striking capability of the self-propelled howitzer by automating the ammunition loading process.
DAPA says this will enable the gunner to strike faster and thus increase the K9's combat effectiveness. The agency also noted that the introduction of automation will reduce crew numbers.
The K9 Thunder is equipped with a 155mm cannon and a 12.7mm heavy machine gun. The fighting vehicle is protected against 14.5 mm armor-piercing shells and 152 mm artillery shrapnel.
The Ka-500 is powered by an MTU MTU 881 diesel engine that develops 1000 horsepower. It enables the fighting vehicle to reach speeds of up to 67 km/h. The K9 Thunder has a maximum range of 360 km.
