Korea upgrades K9A1 Thunder 155mm self-propelled howitzers

The Republic of Korea plans to upgrade its K9A1 Thunder self-propelled howitzers. This is reported by Janes, citing the Defence Acquisition Programme Administration.

Here's What We Know

In addition to the K9A1 Thunder, 120mm self-propelled mortars are to be upgraded. Representatives from the agency visited the Capital Motorized Infantry Division. More than a dozen upgrade requirements were identified during the visit.

It is possible that the agency will reduce the list of criteria. Representatives of the Defence Procurement Programme Office are now looking into the matter. They will also determine the budget and timeline for the programme.

The Republic of Korea Army has more than 1,100 Thunder self-propelled howitzers of the K9 and K9A1 levels in service. The basic version entered service in 1999 as a replacement for the M109A2. The K9A1 variant appeared 19 years later.
