Google, this is discrimination: the Pixel 8 won't get Gemini Nano AI
At the end of last year, Google introduced the Gemini neural network. More precisely, its three variants for different tasks, including Gemini Nano for mobile devices. However, as it turned out, owners of Pixel 8 smartphones will not be able to test Google's artificial intelligence.
Details
A Google spokesperson confirmed the absence of Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8 in a recent episode of The Android Show on the Android Developers channel. According to a developer relations engineer, this is due to the hardware limitations of the smartphone. He didn't specify which limitations we're talking about, but the only difference between the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro is the amount of RAM. In the former case, it's 8GB, while in the latter it's 12GB.
That said, the Gemini Nano runs on the Pixel 8 Pro. The lack of an AI model as standard has widened the gap between the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
Google also confirms that it is working on expanding the Gemini Nano's compatibility with more expensive Android devices.
