"We had crazy ideas": The Witcher 3 game director talks about the reasons for leaving CD Projekt Red and the creation of Rebel Wolves studio
A few days ago, the presentation of the ambitious role-playing game The Blood of Dawnwalker from the Polish studio with.
The game aroused great interest of the public, and journalists had a lot of questions to its developers, headed by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz - game director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and one of the key developers of Cyberpunk 2077.
Here's What We Know
In 2021, Tomaszkiewicz surprised the gamer community with his departure from CD Projekt Red. Most thought that this decision was due to the unsuccessful release of Cyberpunk 2077, but now the experienced game designer has revealed the main reason.
According to Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, he and several of his colleagues had "crazy ideas", which CD Projekt didn't go for, so the only right decision was to start their own company, which became Rebel Wolves. A bit later, Konrad was joined by his brother Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, who was the quest director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and was responsible for many storylines of the cult RPG.
We had crazy ideas. We knew that if we wanted to realise them, we had to start our own studio, because it would be hard to convince any big company - you know, without intellectual property - to change their approach, to do something new and crazy.
Tomaszkiewicz realised that it would be easier for him to manage a small team to realise his ideas than to try to establish a workflow in a huge team:
I founded Rebel Wolves because I felt I wanted to create something special. Secondly, we have a studio where we work with people, not amongst them like in larger companies where it's more difficult. I felt that a smaller team could do more because there was communication within the team and it's easier to talk about the vision. It's easier to feel the creative fire and do something unique.
Well, hopefully, the developers will be able to realise all the ideas on a decent level and The Blood of Dawnwalker will really become an innovative action-RPG that will start a large-scale franchise.
When We Can Expect It
The release date for The Blood of Dawnwalker is unknown, but it has already been stated that the first gameplay reveal will take place in the summer of 2025.
The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
