Fans of DOOM: The Dark Ages on PlayStation 5 are in for an unpleasant surprise: it has officially become known that physical copies of the game are almost empty, containing only about 85 MB of data, and the remaining 84 GB will have to be downloaded from the Internet. This practice has already caused outrage among players who expected a full Blu-ray disc with the game.

Here's What We Know

According to Does It Play, the physical disc of DOOM: The Dark Ages for PS5 is actually just a key to download the full version of the game. The Blu-ray contains only 85 MB, although modern discs can hold up to 100 GB of data. This means that you won't be able to play the game without an internet connection, which is especially frustrating for collectors and those who prefer physical media.

The situation is reminiscent of the Game Key Cards scandal for Nintendo Switch 2, which also sold cards with keys rather than full games.

The digital version of DOOM: The Dark Ages on PS5 weighs more than 84 GB, and the premium edition adds about 18 GB of artwork and bonuses. Accordingly, players will have to spend a lot of time downloading even after purchasing a physical copy.

This practice is criticised by gamers who believe that if a publisher sells a disc, it should contain the full version of the game, not just the installer.

DOOM: The Dark Ages will be released on 15 May 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, immersing players in a medieval world of horror and bloody battles.

It is also known that DOOM: The Dark Ages on PlayStation 5 Pro is disappointing: Digital Foundry found significant performance issues.
