X users can no longer send encrypted messages in private chats. The company announced a "pause" of this feature, noting that it is working on improving it.

Here's What We Know

Although previously sent encrypted messages will remain available for viewing, new ones will not be sent.

Previously, encrypted messages were only available between verified users who were in a mutual dialogue or receiving private messages from each other. The X Help Centre referred to this feature as "early access". However, encryption was never extended to group chats, multimedia messages, or metadata.

It is not yet known when the feature will return to work, and whether it is related to the upcoming XChat platform, a new chat service that the company plans to launch. XChat is rumoured to have advanced security features, including PIN and encrypted chats.

There is no official information about XChat or the reason for the pause of encrypted messages. It is known that last week, X's inbox feature encountered problems after a large-scale service outage, allegedly caused by a fire at a server centre in Oregon. Some technical issues have not yet been resolved.

Representatives of X are not commenting on the situation at this time.

Recently, Pavel Durov revealed the details of Elon Musk's cooperation with xAI, whereby the Grok AI assistant is being integrated into the popular Telegram messenger.
