Hackers Threaten to Leak GTA VI Data Unless Rockstar Pays Ransom: Is It Real or a Scam?
Grand Theft Auto VI, the most anticipated game of our time, is once again surrounded by drama. Reports have surfaced that hackers have allegedly gained access to the project's source code and are attempting to sell it on dark forums.
What happened?
According to insider reports and monitoring of specialized resources, advertisements for the sale of Rockstar Games data have begun circulating on the Darknet and in closed Telegram channels. Sellers claim to have not only code fragments but also internal documentation and early builds of the game.
If Rockstar Games does not pay the ransom by April 14th — the group ShinyHunters threatens to release all GTA 6 information publicly.
A new hack or fraud?
The expert community is currently skeptical. There are three main theories about what's happening:
1. Echo of the 2022 leak: Most experts suggest this is a "repackaging" of data stolen by cybercriminal Arion Kurtaj nearly 4 years ago. At that time, about 90 videos and part of the code were leaked, and the hacker was later sentenced to indefinite detention in a specialized medical facility.
2. Fresh attack: If information about a new hack is confirmed, it will be a catastrophic blow to Rockstar Games' security, which has significantly strengthened its defenses since the last incident.
3. Usual scam: Similar "loud" lots often turn out to be fake. Scammers attempt to profit from the hype by demanding large sums in cryptocurrency for files that ultimately have no value.
Rockstar Games' reaction
At present, neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company Take-Two Interactive have made official statements regarding the "new" hack. The publisher usually reacts quickly to the publication of real materials, blocking them under DMCA, so the absence of widespread content deletions may indirectly confirm the fake theory.
The release of GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, but if information about a new hack is confirmed — further delays cannot be ruled out.
