Despite the presence of U.S. F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters, Russian drones could once again violate Romanian airspace

The Romanian Defence Ministry suspects that Russian drones may have violated the country's airspace again during the attack on Ukraine. This is reported by Reuters and BBC.

Here's What We Know

On the night of 30 September 2023, Russia attacked Ukraine with approximately 40 Shahed-136 drones. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have destroyed 30 Iranian-origin kamikaze drones.

At the same time, Romania's radar system indicated a possible violation of the country's airspace. The signal was detected in the direction of the municipality of Galants. So far, the Romanian Ministry of Defence has no data about drones falling on the territory of Romania. Authorities have recently stated their readiness to shoot down drones in such situations.

Earlier this month, at least three drones went down in Romania. The wreckage of one of them was found at a distance of about 14 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. In response to the Russian drone flights, the US deployed four F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets to Romania. As we can see, the presence of the planes has so far failed, and Russian drones continue to penetrate the NATO country's airspace.
