Romania ready to shoot down Russian drones that fly through its airspace

In less than two weeks, at least three drones that Russia used to attack grain infrastructure in the Odessa region have fallen on Romanian territory. Romania seems ready to start shooting them down after all. But that's not certain.

Here's What We Know

This statement was made by General Gheorghiță Vlad, deputy chief of defence staff. According to him, Romania is ready to shoot down Russian drones if they pose a serious threat to it.

Increasing attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in the Odessa region have forced Romania to deploy some 6,000 troops and air defence radars in the Danube Delta region. Gheorghiță Vlad did not rule out that surface-to-air missile systems would start shooting down Russian UAVs.

According to him, the military is ready to use any means to defend the country's territory depending on the level of threat. How exactly Romania will determine the level of threat from Russian drones, the deputy chief of defence staff did not elaborate.

Recently, fragments of one of the downed UAVs were found 14 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. Earlier, Romania and the US announced that US F-16 fighter jets would be sent to the country in response to Russian UAV flights.
