The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine explained the key differences between multiple launch rocket systems M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS.
What is the difference
The Ukrainian army in the war against Russia will use both MLRS. M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS reminiscent of the Soviet rocket systems "Grad", "Hurricane" and "Smerch", which, unfortunately, a simple Ukrainian man in the street learned about in early 2014.
System M270 MLRS built on the basis of a tracked infantry vehicle M2 Bradley. It has two launch containers, and the number of missiles, range and capabilities depend on the layout. The maximum number of missiles in a container is 6. The minimum is 1.
multiple launch rocket system M270 MLRS is versatile. Missiles with a cassette part have a range of 32 / 45 / 70 km. The most powerful missile for this MLRS is called ATACMS. It can hit an enemy target at a distance of 300 km.
multiple launch rocket system HIMARS, which has been actively discussed in Ukraine since last week, is characterized by mobility. MLRS has a wheelbase and weighs less compared to M270 MLRS. She received one container instead of two, but the set of missiles is identical.
