The Armed Forces of Ukraine will get their own space satellite with access to the ICEYE satellite imagery database
At the end of June 2022, Ukrainians raised $20 million for three Bayraktar TB2 drones, but Baykar promised to donate the UAVs for free. Nearly two months later, it became known what the money was spent on.
What we know
Ukrainian volunteer Serhiy Prytula confirmed in a short video message that the money raised by Ukrainians was used to buy the satellite. The decision on what to spend $20 million was made jointly with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Details of the deal and technical parameters of the spacecraft will be made public later in a separate press release. Now we know that together with the satellite Ukraine will get an access to the data base of images from the constellation of satellites of ICEYE company. Ukrainian entrepreneur and founder of Firefly Aerospace Maxym Polyakov assisted in the deal.
Access to the photos was purchased for more than a year in advance. This will allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to quickly obtain satellite images of high quality, which will help to carry out operational planning of military operations.
