It's official: the U.S. transfers 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine
Today U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement in which he confirmed that the United States is transferring 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This number is equal to one Ukrainian battalion.
The president did not specify the terms of delivery, but noted that it would take time.
"Today I am announcing that the U.S. is transferring 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. We are sending an entire battalion of these tanks to Ukraine. This was recommended by Secretary of Defense Austin. It's to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. Abrams tanks are some of the most advanced in the world. They are very difficult to control and operate. We will train the Ukrainian military and we will start doing it immediately. It takes time to deliver the tanks."
In addition to starting a training program for Ukrainian tankers immediately, the United States will also provide eight repair and recovery vehicles to service the tanks.
The M1 Abrams is the U.S. main battle tank and is currently one of the heaviest tanks, with a combat weight in excess of 62 tons. Abrams is a heavily armed, armored, mobile fighting vehicle designed to fight in a variety of environments.
