BAE Systems will develop an infrared seeker for the THAAD anti-missile system with a launch range of 200 km

U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin has signed a contract with the British company BAE Systems to develop an infrared homing head for the THAAD missile defense system.

What we know

The new technology will be integrated into the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system. BAE Systems will develop it at Electronic Systems' facilities in Endicott, New York; Huntsville, Alabama; and Nashua, New Hampshire. The work is aimed at supporting U.S. and allied forces with means to counter ballistic missiles.

Recall that THAAD was adopted by the American army in 2008. The cost of one complex makes from $2.3 to $3 billion. The US army has two batteries in combat condition and one more is on rotation. A total of seven batteries are on the balance sheet.

THAAD uses anti-missile systems weighing 900 kg and 6.17 m long. The missile system can destroy targets that fly at up to 4.8 km/sec. The interception range is 200 km. The system can destroy enemy ballistic missiles launched at 3500 km.
