Lockheed Martin is working on a medium-range missile system based on the MK 41 vertical launch system.

What we know

The new development will be delivered to the United States Army by the end of 2023. At the first stage, the US military will receive four batteries of missile systems. The prototype system, work on which began in 2020, is called Typhon. It includes launchers, missiles and a battery control center.

The idea is to create a system that can destroy enemy targets at a distance of 500-1800 km or even more. But at the same time it should not overlap with Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon systems,  which have a maximum range of more than 2,700 km. The US Army has joined forces with the US Navy to create such a system.

The new system will use SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles (SM-2 family). SM-6 can hit targets at 240-460 km distance. Tomahawk ways to destroy enemy objects at a distance of 1600 km from the point of launch.
