Hungary receives first self-propelled howitzers Panzerhaubitze 2000 under $565 million contract

The first Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery units have reached Hungary. The German howitzers were due to arrive as early as February 2022.

What we know

So far Hungary has only received two Panzerhaubitze 2000s. The first howitzer was delivered on August 10 and the second on August 17. The artillery pieces were adopted by the 101st Artillery Division.

Hungary and Germany signed a $565 million contract at the end of 2018. Under the contract, Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is to deliver 24 Panzerhaubitze 2000 artillery systems and 44 Leopard 2A7 HU tanks.

Hungary is the 19th customer for Leopard tanks and the 8th operator of Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers. The German equipment will enable it to give up dozens of German T-72 tanks and D-20 artillery pieces.
