The U.S. is testing an upgraded Patriot missile system

In the early summer of 2022, the United States Operational Test Command launched a series of tests of the advanced Patriot surface-to-air missile system.

Here's What We Know

The U.S. decided to update the popular SAM for the first time since 2018. The test program is designed for a year. The modernization of the surface-to-air missile system brought a new interface.

Developers have created a more user-friendly user interface that makes it easier for soldiers to interact with the surface-to-air missile system. However, it is unknown whether 3D icons have been added. Raytheon developers have been workingon the 3D interface since 2019.

Soldiers note that the new software improves PatriotSAM control. The upgrade eliminates the need to memorize the entire database. Instead, soldiers only need to remember key words. As part of the testing of the third-generation surface-to-air missile system, soldiers perform test launches of missiles and conduct simulations of the air defense system to evaluate the Patriot's effectiveness.

The first Patriotair defense system was adopted in the early 80s of XX century. Along with the USA, Kuwait and Japan are the main users of the complex. The surface-to-air missile system is designed to destroy enemy air targets, including aircraft, drones and missiles.
