Spain, Germany and several other European nations have begun work on hypersonic missile interceptors. The project is funded by the European Defense Fund.

Here's What We Know

In July, the European Union announced projects funded by the defense fund. Their list included the $110 million European Hypersonic Defense Interceptor research program, which will last 36 months. In this case, the European Commission will invest $100 million.

Thirteen companies from Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Belgium and Norway take part in the project. They include Germany's Diehl Defense and Spain's Sener Aerospacial Sociedad Anonima. The two companies are working together to develop new versions of the IRIS-T medium-range surface-to-air missile system.

The goal of the program is to develop an interceptor that can be integrated into an air defense system. It should help provide protection against enemy hypersonic and ballistic missiles.
