Russians fired artillery at Zaporizhzhya NPP, Europe's largest nuclear power plant with six units of 6,000 MW
The Russian army staged a provocation in the Zaporizhzhia region. This time, the occupiers shelled not civilian infrastructure, but the most powerful nuclear power plant in Europe.
What is known
We are talking about the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which was seized by Russian soldiers in early spring 2022. The station has six power units. The capacity of each of them is 1000 MW.
on August 5 at 14:30 (EET) the first artillery strike on the territory of the NPP was recorded. Three explosions occurred near the industrial site. According to state company Energoatom, the Russians damaged a high-voltage line and as a result an alarm was activated on one of the six power generating units. The unit was eventually shut down.
Later, the Russians fired multiple rocket launchers and destroyed an electrical substation in the city of Energodar, leaving six neighborhoods without power. Another shelling of the nuclear power plant was recorded in the evening. Shells flew into the site next to the nuclear reactor, damaging the nitrogen-oxygen plant.
"Energoatom" states that there are no victims, but there is a possibility of fire, spraying of radioactive substances and hydrogen leakage. It should be noted that the Russian specialists of Rosatom most likely knew about the impending attack, as they left the nuclear power plant.
