U.S. Navy officially begins using robotic ships

Robot ships have officially joined the U.S. Navy. So far they are minesweepers.

What is known

The autonomous minesweeper UISS has been assigned an initial operational capability. This was announced by the Unmanned and Small Combat Ship Program Executive Office. This is a very important achievement toward the formation of a crewed and uncrewed fleet.

UISS is equipped with a diesel engine that provides a top speed of 140 km/h. The autonomous operation time is 20 hours. The trawler can tow up to 1,800 kg. The ship is able to detect mines, calculate their class and determine the exact coordinates. Payloads for UISS include mine neutralization systems, sensors for reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance, sonar and non-lethal weapons.

The developer of UISS is Textron Systems. Once the minesweepers are fully operational, the United States will be able to abandon the Avenger class ships and the MH helicopters-53 Sea Dragon. The U.S. Navy will use UISS to neutralize mines in operational areas, straits and landing zones.
