Facebook is preparing an instant messenger for schools. What can go wrong?
Teenagers are gradually losing interest in Facebook, but the social network is not giving up and plans to lure the young people through a new platform for communicating with classmates - High School Networks for Messenger.
What it is?
About testing of the new function in the Facebook messenger, TNW sources said. The High School Networks project is aimed at high school students who will be able to discuss training issues with their classmates and subscribe to chats related to a particular subject. Judging by the screenshots, these channels will be displayed in a separate tab of Messenger. The concept itself resembles Slack and other corporate correspondence services.
It is still unknown how students will be connected to the school network and what educational institutions plan to participate in the experiment. High School Networks already exists in the iOS-application, and although it is hidden from users, it was possible to get a text description of some functions from the code, including finding classmates, inviting and verifying new members of the group. And since Facebook knows everything about its users, Messenger can itself suggest adding a school in which the user is studying.
The company declined to comment on the rumors.
With the smallest
Last year, Facebook launched an instant messenger without advertising Messenger Kids for children from 6 years. Now the social network has targeted adolescents, but in the light of recent events, schools may refuse to support the initiative, fearing for the personal data of the students. The timing of the launch of High School Networks is not reported.
