A gamer laptop that won't suffer blackouts: Gigabyte G6X 9KG review (2024)

By: Anry Sergeev | 26.06.2024, 10:27

In addition to the top line of AORUS gaming laptops, Gigabyte has in its range of more affordable models that have quite interesting characteristics, given the price. Today on the review of the gg editorial team is such a model Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024). The laptop turned out to be surprisingly interesting and balanced solution, given the price. It demonstrates high performance both in games and work tasks. The combination of a 14-core, 20-thread Intel Core i7-13650HX and discrete GeForce RTX 4060 graphics with a TGP of 105W proved to be very efficient, considering the screen resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. To this we should add surprisingly good battery life, as for such a configuration, and a nice bonus in the form of support for Power Delivery 3.0 over Type-C charging. The laptop has a comfortable full-size keyboard, very good upgrade options and a practical case. Of course, the laptop has some disadvantages. But, given the price, it is difficult to call them critical. The cooling system Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) is loud at maximum loads. And I would like a wider colour gamut of the screen.

What does the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) come with?

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) comes in a very compact box, as it does for a gaming model. The kit is not exactly standard. Inside is the laptop itself, a 180W power supply, a power cable, a screw for attaching an M.2 SSD, thermal pads for it and documentation.

What about the look and build of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024)?

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) looks pretty calm, as for a gaming model, without bright, aggressive elements and backlighting from all the holes. There are only small stylised drawings with the letter X on the work surface and the lid. Almost the whole case is made of plastic. The display frame and the lower part of the main unit have a rough surface, the topcase is smooth with a matte finish. It looks and feels nice, but it collects fingerprints a bit. The top cover is metal, dark grey in colour. It also has a matte finish. Of the decorative elements - the Gigabyte logo on the right side of the cover and the aforementioned drawing in the lower left corner.

Connectors and vents are placed on three sides of the laptop, which is quite typical for gaming models. The left edge has a full-size USB Type-A 3.2 Gen1, a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or headset, and a Kensington Lock slot.

On the other side is a full-size USB Type A version 3.2 Gen2 and USB Type C 3.2 Gen2 with Power Delivery 3.0 support, so the laptop can be charged from a compatible power supply. Power up to 100W is supported, so you won't be able to play with maximum performance. But for working tasks it is quite enough. And you can, for example, leave the Type-C power supply with Power Delivery in the office and not carry a complete large one.

At the back there are two hot air outlet zones, as well as a few more connectors. RJ-45, HDMI 2.1, USB Type C 3.2 Gen2 with Display Port 1.4 support, as well as a port to connect the included power supply. The set of ports is quite good, there are all the essentials.

On the front edge Gigabyte engineers decided to place the indicators of the laptop.

The frames around the perimeter of the screen may not be the thinnest, but quite usual for gaming models. Above the display there is a webcam with a resolution of 720p, an indicator of its work, as well as two microphones. Quite a standard set.

At the corners of the bottom cover there are four massive rubber feet for reliable grip with the table surface. The most part of the bottom cover is reserved for the cooling system openings. Cold air is drawn in from below and through the keyboard. The bottom cover of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) is fixed with standard screws. There are a lot of them, but it may be possible to remove it in the future. In addition to the cooling system, under the lid the user will have access to the network adapter, both SO-DIMM slots for RAM and an additional M.2 slot for SSD. The notebook supports the installation of 2x PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSDs up to 4TB. Therefore, the laptop has very good upgrade options by today's standards.

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) looks nice and stylish. It is well assembled, it uses thick enough plastic and metal, the surfaces almost do not sag. Dimensions are 361x259x28.9 mm , and the weight is 2.5 kg. Yes, it's not the most compact laptop, but that's normal for a gaming model. It fits into a standard laptop compartment in a backpack without any problems.

How comfortable is the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) to use?

The display unit of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) is secured by two hinges. The maximum opening angle is approximately 130°, which is quite enough for a gaming model. The hinges are successful in securing the display well, and the notebook is easy to open with one hand.

The GIGABYTE G6X 9KG 2024 uses a full-size island-style keyboard with an optional number pad. The top row of function keys has a slightly reduced height and the NumPad has a reduced width. The arrows are not separated from the other keys in any way, but are of standard size, so the right Shift has a slightly reduced length. The power button is separated from the keyboard, so you won't be able to press it accidentally. Among the unusual innovations of the layout so far is a separate key for launching the AI assistant Copilot. Microsoft once told about this innovation in Windows keyboards. The key is located between the right Ctrl and Alt keys.

The keys are medium-sized and have a full stroke of 1.5mm. There's a single-zone backlight with four brightness levels and 15 colours to choose from. In general, the keyboard turned out to be comfortable, with elastic and informative stroke and almost standard layout, which minimises the time for getting used to it.

The touchpad is medium-sized: 121x83.4 mm. It is plastic, but has a good coating on which fingers glide very well. Sensitivity and accuracy are at a good level and for most tasks, except games, you won't need to connect a mouse.

How good is the screen quality of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024)?

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) features a 16-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200. The aspect ratio is 16:10, which is increasingly used in both business models and gaming laptops. The colour gamut is claimed to be 45% NTSC, refresh rate: 165 Hz. There is an effective anti-reflective coating. The screen has maximum viewing angles, a good level of contrast and brightness, which will be enough for comfortable work and in a bright office. But the colours are not very saturated due to a rather narrow colour gamut.

Hardware measurements showed that the maximum brightness is 306.164 cd/m², the brightness of the black field - 0.228 cd/m², and static contrast ratio - 1343:1, very good indicators, as for an inexpensive gaming model. Colour coverage is slightly narrower than sRGB. It is quite normal for gaming, but for professional work with photos and video is not very suitable. The colour temperature is a bit too high, around 8000K.

What about the performance and battery life of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024)?

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) is powered by a powerful Intel 13th generation Raptor Lake processor. Specifically, the Intel Core i7-13650HX. It includes 14 cores: 6 productive with clock speeds from 2.6 to 4.9 GHz and 8 energy efficient, from 1.9 to 3.6 GHz, supported up to 20 threads of computation, cache - 24 MB. The processor is manufactured using Intel 7 (10nm) process technology. The standard TDP level is 55W, with a maximum theoretical short-term power up to 157W. For light tasks there is an integrated graphics accelerator Intel UHD Graphics, which has 16 executive units and can run at up to 1550 MHz. Theamount of RAM is - 16 GB DDR5-4800 MHz. In our case, it is two 8GB slats. Both SO-DIMM slots are available to the user, up to 64 GB is supported. Wireless interfaces: Bluetooth 5.2 and fast Wi-Fi 6E(802.11ax) 2x2, besides there is gigabit Ethernet. The NVIDIA GeForce GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop is used as a discrete video accelerator. It's far from the most powerful mobile graphics chip, but it's worth mentioning that its TGP is 105W, which is pretty good. Especially considering that we've seen gaming models with the 4070 at a TGP of 70W. The graphics accelerator is built on NVIDIA's 5nm AD107 graphics chip and has 3072 CUDA cores, 96 texture modules, 24 RT cores and 96 tensor cores. The base frequency is 1710 MHz and the maximum frequency (Boost) is 2100 MHz. The amount of video memory is 8 GB GDDR6. The notebook is equipped with MUX Switch multiplexer, which allows you to connect the discrete card directly to the display, bypassing the integrated one. This allows for slightly increased graphics performance and reduced picture output latency.

Gigabyte puts a lot of emphasis on AI in its promo materials for the laptop and claims that thanks to the fourth-generation tensor cores in the GeForce RTX 4060, the laptop is 20 times faster in generative AI tasks than laptops without discrete graphics. That's likely to be the case. But on the other hand, there are already new processors with separate NPU modules. Unfortunately, it is still almost impossible to really compare and evaluate performance in AI tasks: there are almost no relevant synthetic tests, and all generative AI and Big Language Models are predominantly online. Therefore, conversations about AI will be more relevant when all generative tasks will be performed directly on laptops or PCs. And we can see real and useful AI results that are processed directly on a laptop through the successful use of Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS 3) in games.

Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) Synthetic Performance Tests

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) performs well in synthetic tests, both graphics and CPU. Except that with ray tracing in real time the notebook copes a little worse. But this is quite expected from GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop. So the laptop's power is enough for comfortable gaming in native resolution and for work tasks.

Cooling and stability of the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024)

The GIGABYTE G6X (2024) features WINDFORCE cooling system, which includes 2 fans with 67 blades, 5 copper heat pipes and a 219 fin heatsink with a thickness of 0.15mm. AIDA64 stress test showed that the components can warm up to 100°, and there is trotting up to 15%. But at the same time the average CPU frequency is almost 4.1 GHz, which is a very good indicator. Significantly more expensive models with Core i9 keep the average frequency only 100-150 MHz higher. In real tasks and games, there are no problems with stability. The keyboard remains cool, no hot air blows on my hands even at maximum loads. But at maximum revolutions the cooling system works quite loudly.

Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) Drive.

The Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) features a 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with GIGABYTE AG450E1024-SI proprietaryPCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface. There is a slot for an additional M.2 SSD.

It shows quite a bit of speed performance with almost 5200MB/s during reads, and around 4800MB/s during writes.

Gaming on the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024).

The laptop copes well with all modern games, you can get a comfortable 60 FPS at medium or high settings at a native resolution of 1900x1200.

  • Cyberpunk 2077. Ray tracing preset: ultra. DLSS in auto mode with frame generation. 80-90 FPS
  • God of War. Max settings. DLSS in quality mode. 80 FPS
  • The Ascent. Maximum settings, with ray tracing, DLSS in quality mode. 65-80 FPS.
  • Callisto Protocol. Combination of medium and high settings, with ray tracing, FSR 2 in quality mode. About 70 FPS

Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) battery life

The laptop has a 73W*h battery. It supports 50% fast charging in 30 minutes from the included power supply, as well as charging from Type-C blocks with Power Delivery 3.0 support, as we've already written about earlier. A full charge takes just under 2 hours. Of course, playing games on battery power is a questionable idea. Like any gaming laptop, the Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) will last less than 2 hours. But at minimum load, working with documents and low brightness, the laptop can withstand about 6.5 hours. A good indicator for a gaming model.

Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) audio system

Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024) quite standard stereo system, including speakers of 2 watts. They are quite standard, as for this class of notebooks: the volume reserve is sufficient, but there is almost no bass. So it will be comfortable to watch a film, listen to music - not so much.

Software Gigabyte G6X 9KG (2024)

For all the main settings of the notebook, there is a proprietary application Gigabyte Control Centre. It is quite simple and straightforward to use. In the main section you can view the current system load, adjust the performance mode and cooling system operation, adjust brightness, blue filter, speaker volume, switch the video card operation mode (MUX Switch), etc. The second section is responsible for setting the keyboard backlight, in the third you can write macros, and the fourth allows you to configure the charging mode of the laptop.
