Ukraine receives 160 Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks to form six tank battalions
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have started receiving German-made Leopard tanks. A total of 160 combat vehicles will be delivered to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces can expect 160 Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks. The defence minister said that European countries would hardly be able to provide more combat vehicles due to limited resources.
Last week it was reported that Portugal sent three Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine. Earlier, Germany and Poland sent their combat vehicles. Canada, Sweden and Norway are next in line. In total, Ukraine will receive 60 Leopard 2 tanks, which will form two battalions.
The Leopard 2 will be accompanied by the older Leopard 1 tanks, but there will be more of them. The Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to form four tank battalions with 100 Leopard 1s. It is also worth noting that the UK has already sent the Challenger 2, and the US will hand over the M1A1 SA Abrams. But the American tanks will not arrive until the autumn.
