Gyeongsang Province in eastern South Korea is set to host a protest against the deployment of American THAAD air defense systems in the country on September 3 at 01:30 (EDT) or 22:30 (PDT).

Here's What We Know

South Korean activists condemn the state government's announcement of plans to fully deploy the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system. Local residents and activists say the THAAD system could have a negative impact on the region's residents and the environment.

Recall that the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense systems were delivered to South Korea several years ago. This has caused deterioration in relations between Seoul and Beijing. The Chinese authorities said the appearance of U.S. missile defense systems in South Korea disrupts the balance of power in the region.

Seoul, in turn, stressed that the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense will only be used to protect the state from various types of missile threats, including nuclear ones, from North Korea.
