Bluetooth Auracast will allow you to share audio with multiple devices

Bluetooth audio devices are becoming increasingly popular, but until now, their sharing capabilities have been limited to one or two devices. Bluetooth gadgets will soon be able to broadcast audio to all other Bluetooth devices in range thanks to a new technology known as Auracast.

This week, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) announced a new Bluetooth feature that will benefit everyone from audiophiles to ordinary consumers who appreciate the ease of wireless music. Auracast is a brand new technology that builds on top of the LE Audio protocol's current Audio Sharing function. The former only allows point-to-point audio transmission and sharing, but Auracast will enable Bluetooth gadgets to broadcast sound to as many other devices within range as possible.

Simply said, one Bluetooth device will be able to advertise its capabilities of streaming audio and other devices will receive instructions on how to join the Auracast transmission. According to Bluetooth SIG, the UI will be similar to that of public Wi-Fi networks, with the broadcast able to be limited to specific devices with the correct passkey. Audio streaming will allow you to do things like connect to a TV in a public place, share a presentation with many individuals, or listen to one of several music playlists at the gym simply by tuning into it. Furthermore, for those who require hearing aid devices, this will improve the audio quality.

Peter Liu, who is System Architect of Pixel Ecosystem Products at Google, said in a statement that they are working with the Bluetooth SIG. This seems to suggest Auracast functionality may be added to devices like the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a. The Hearing Loss Association of America has expressed its support for Auracast, and Google and Xiaomi are already working to support the new standard, which should contribute to its acceptance. Bluetooth SIG expects the final Auracast specification to be released in the coming months.
