"Liberation" tells the story of slave Peter, who escapes and joins the Union Army after a terrible beating. The film is based on a true story: photographs of the naked back of a man badly whipped by an overseer were published around the world in 1863, giving the abolitionist movement proof of the brutality of American slavery.
