U.S. and South Korea will conduct joint exercises involving U.S. nuclear forces

The South Korean Defense Ministry announced preparations for an exercise involving U.S. nuclear forces. This step will be aimed at increasing the effectiveness of countering nuclear threats from the DPRK.

Here's What We Know

At the moment we are talking about a desk exercise. They involve simulations of situations whose scenario is based on a nuclear threat from North Korea. But trainings will also take place on the territory of the United States.

South Korea and the United States intend to discuss a coordinated response to the use of nuclear weapons by North Korea. Note that during 2022 North Korea launched an unprecedented number of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental missiles, towards the southern neighbor and Japan. Also, according to U.S. intelligence, Pyongyang plans to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017.

In February 2023, there will be a command-staff exercise, which will be attended by representatives of the South Korean Defense Ministry. Another phase of the exercise is planned for May this year.
