Start-up Midjourney has announced the suspension of a free trial of its AI-powered image generator.

According to the head of Midjourney, a huge number of people are creating one-time accounts in order to use the free version of the generator. The company also claims to be facing a shortage of GPUs.

Although the startup's head initially talked about the high number of dipfakes, and this is likely to have been the main reason. For example, Midjourney recently used it to create images of the alleged arrest of former US president Donald Trump.

The AI also created images of Pope Francis wearing a stylish Balenciaga down jacket.

A subscription to Midjourney costs between $10 and $60 per month.
