Ukrainian tankers prepare for training on M1A1 Abrams tanks in the US
Members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will soon be able to start training on M1A1 Abrams tanks. This was reported by CNN citing a senior US Defence Department official.
Here's What We Know
The official confirmed that the training has not yet started, but will begin "relatively soon". This is because the Pentagon continues to procure the equipment needed to train Ukrainian tank crews. The Defence Ministry spokesman also added that over 7,000 Ukrainian fighters have been trained in the USA.
Earlier this year, the White House approved the delivery of M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. A few weeks later, the US announced that Ukraine would receive M1A1 Abrams combat vehicles. Sending the older tanks would speed up deliveries.
In late March, US Undersecretary of Defence Gabe Camarillo confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive the M1A1 SA Abrams. They are expected to arrive in the combat zone by the autumn of 2023.
