Tesla to set up lithium recycling lab for batteries in Nevada

Tesla's ambition to produce 20 million electric cars a year comes with the need to increase battery production, forcing the company to ramp up raw material extraction. In the near future, the state of Nevada may have a laboratory for lithium recycling.

Here's What We Know

Elon Musk's company already has one facility in the state. It is engaged in the production of batteries for electric cars. It was revealed this week that Tesla has applied for a "Lithium Laboratory" to be located in the town of Sparks. The application description states that the new facility will be responsible for "research, development and manufacturing".

According to Musk, there is no shortage of lithium in the world, but the rate of recycling is not keeping up with demand from electric car battery manufacturers. Tesla appears to have decided to fight the problem on its own. The company is also already building a lithium purification plant in Nevada.
