Spain to deploy NASAMS surface-to-air missiles alongside MIM-104 Patriot to protect NATO summit in Lithuania

Germany began deploying the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system in Vilnius last week. Additional protection will be provided by Spain, which is redeploying NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems to Lithuania.

Here's What We Know

Patriot and NASAMS will provide airspace protection during the NATO summit. The event will be held in the Lithuanian capital on 11 and 12 July. The transfer of NASAMS has been confirmed by Spanish diplomats.

Spain deployed a battery of anti-aircraft missile systems to Latvia's neighbour, Lithuania, last summer. The decision to transfer the air defence system was taken against the background of a possible escalation in Kaliningrad.
