The US has sent one of the world's largest submarines to Japan - the Ohio-class USS Michigan with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles has arrived in Yokosuka port

In the middle of last month, the nuclear-powered submarine Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived in the Republic of Korea for the first time in six years. A few months later, the Ohio-class submarine paid a visit to Japan.

Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived in the port of Yokosuka. The submarine's visit reflects the US commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and complements the exercises US forces are conducting with Japanese allies.

Michigan (SSGN-727) is one of 18 Ohio-class submarines and one of four to be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles (154) rather than Trident II ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. It was ordered in 1975 and entered service in 1982.

Guided-missile submarines provide strike and special operations capability. With a displacement of over 18,000 tonnes and a length of 170 metres, the Michigan (SSGN-727) is one of the largest submarines in the world.
