From hot pans and food to pool water: the Samsung Galaxy Watch has learnt to measure temperature
Samsung has announced new features for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, which will be unveiled next week, and earlier models. These include the ability to measure the temperature of any surfaces, objects and liquids.
Here's How It Works
This is made possible by a new app called Thermo Check: LifeTemperature, which is already available on Google Play. The description says that the app will allow owners of "future Galaxy Watch devices" to measure temperature without having to make physical contact with a surface. This could be a hot pan, food, or even pool water.
The Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic, which Samsung will show at a presentation on 26 July, will be able to support this app out-of-the-box, while Galaxy Watch 5 models will have to wait for an update in the future. There's no mention of the Galaxy Watch 4, so it looks like older models won't get the new feature.
The temperature sensor was installed in the Galaxy Watch 5, but it hasn't been fully utilised yet. Samsung released an update in April that activated the sensor, but so far only to track women's cycles.
