Essential wants to hide the camera under the smartphone's display

Recently, Essential founder Andy Rubin told about the patent for a slide-out camera for smartphones, and in the new application of the startup, the option of placing a photo module under the display is described.

Why is this necessary?

Both Essential developments are aimed at increasing the useful display area in the "frameless" gadgets of the new generation. And if the sliding design in the Vivo APEX style can break when falling, then the camera under the screen is not threatened. On the other hand, engineers need somehow to provide a transparent area above the sensor, so that the pixels of the matrix (OLED or TFT) do not interfere with capturing light.

The patent describes different ways to solve this problem, but so far it seems more like a collection of ideas than a real development.

And what about the others?

Meizu recently filed a similar patent application. Insiders add that after reducing the "bang" in the iPhone this season, Apple plans to get rid of the cut-out in the display in 2019 (to spite all manufacturers who thoughtlessly began to copy this element in their devices ).
