71% of musicians fear artificial intelligence will rob them of their earnings

More than two-thirds of musicians fear that future developments in artificial intelligence technology will make it impossible to make a living from music. This is according to a survey by the French Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers (Sacem) and its German counterpart, GEMA.

More than 15,000 members of the music industry took part in the survey. 71% of respondents fear that they will not be able to make ends meet in the future.

The report also includes market analyses and expert interviews. They showed that by 2028, musicians' income could fall by 27%, equivalent to €2.7bn ($2.9bn).

That said, already 35% of respondents are actively using AI tools in the music creation process.

However, 95% of respondents demanded more transparency from technology developers. A similar number demanded that authorities pay more attention to AI-related copyright issues.

Sacem managing director Cecile Rap-Veber said it is not about "slowing down" AI activities. On the contrary, the organisation wants the technology to benefit the community.

"We are actively working with players in the sector to implement technical solutions aimed at identifying content generated by AI" the report said.
