Fraudsters tried to defraud Apple of $3 million by replacing more than 5,000 counterfeit iPhones with original ones

In the US, two men have been found guilty of organising a fraud scheme to swindle Apple out of several million dollars.

Here's What We Know

Chinese citizens Haotian Sun and Pengfei Xue used an old scheme to exchange counterfeit smartphones for original ones. They allegedly turned in fake iPhones with fake serial numbers to retail shops and Apple authorised service providers under warranty, and received original gadgets to replace them. They received the counterfeit devices from Hong Kong.

And, according to court documents, the men managed to use this scheme for quite a long time - from May 2017 to September 2019. During that time, they handed over 5,000 counterfeit phones to Apple, intending to cause the company $3 million in losses.

The fraudsters face up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for 21 June 2024.
